On the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the storming of the beaches of Normandy, this is fascinating stuff. Load men, like bullets, into your artillery, and let them fly, hoping some of them reach their mark and knowing thousands others will die there in the attempt.
It was the beginning of the end of Hitler's hold on Europe, planned for almost two years, and ominously known as Operation Overlord. There will never again be such a battle from the sea.
70 years ago, my parents were not yet born. Almost all of the men who survived that day have died.
For them, for their fallen comrades', and their families' sacrifice, we remember. And for the liberated and their descendants, for the eleven million killed in Hitler's death camps alone, may we never forget.
