NYC November Part 1: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden & The New Yorker 11/5/21

New York in November, part 1

Thanks to Blogger refusing to upload photos in the order I set them, I plan to break this up into manageable sections to keep from pulling my hair out.

First up: our arrival Friday, Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden that night, and the New Yorker Hotel

Watching the weather forecast as we got closer, it would be raining every day, then a few days, then one day, then every day. Finally, the day before, we could safely leave out the endless rain gear for the weekend and pack a bit lighter.

Let's GO

pro-tip: always sit on the odd numbered side to get a view of Manhattan on arrival! Seat 19A
bonus: no one in the middle seat!

The internet/wi-fi usually available onboard was not functioning, which meant no flight tracker to tell me what we were over, but I did manage to self spot Lake Erie and Canada in the distance.

over Pennsylvania, this is Susquehanna Steam Electric Station

alas, I had no luck trying a Google Photo search to match where this Longhorn looking lake is

but we know where THIS lady is!

everybody on the right side has to look at Brooklyn, but we lefties get Manhattan

4 hour flight into 4 minute video:

I landed about 20 minutes ahead of Steph so I was on hand to scoop her up and show her the ropes of getting her Metro card, getting onto the Q70 bus, and over to the Jackson Heights subway station for our ride into Manhattan, complete with on board entertainment dudes.

Our subway ride ended at the new Moynihan Penn Station. It'll never replace the original Penn Station, but it's an improvement!

Just one block over was our stay for the night, The New Yorker Hotel.

this Art Deco beauty is an NYC landmark and I have always wanted to stay here.

Since the Billy Joel concert is literally across the street at Madison Square Garden, this was the perfect opportunity.

our view included the Edge at Hudson Yards, which is the building in the center with the big v-shaped platform sticking out of the building. That is the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere at 100 stories, on a glass floor, no less.

I loved the little red triangles over the elevator that was arriving

We headed out for dinner at Pizza Suprema and Steph found her new obsession: their pickle pizza. She talked about it the entire weekend but we were never able to make it happen again.

(it was reallllly good)

And then it was time for the show!

Billy Joel's return to Madison Square Garden since the COVID closures was sold out

I had just happened to see, back in March,  the reschedule return date was falling the night before we were scheduled to visit NYC and checked with Steph if she would be up for coming in a day earlier to catch the show. I grabbed us two tickets that looked like a good spot behind the stage. Yeah, behind the stage. I learned decades ago Billy's shows play to 360 views, no matter where he is.

this may be my favorite people watching person of the whole trip

yeah, these were great seats. We had a little table in front of us and then it dropped to the next section, so there were no heads in front.

see? 360 all the way

You know you're on to something when several of the guides you encounter to direct you to your spot say, "oh, those are good seats."

Post concert, our two minute walk back to our room was worth every penny!
