The 1905 Murder of J.H. Thompson, New York Times Editor, at the Hotel St. James

Additional news clippings regarding the murder of Mr. Thompson from The Curious Case of the Hotel St. James

September 7, 1905 Mr. J.H. Thompson, working for The New York Times forty years, and resident of the St. James since its opening, was murdered in his 5th floor apartment. The Times offered a $1000 reward for the killer.

The New York Times was on the case attempting to track down any clues to the murderer

In the end, it was the bellboy, Richard Hannibal, who was stabbed to death himself as the police were closing in on him as the murderer of Mr. Thompson.

He had stayed on and "helped" the police in their investigation at the St. James for a month following the killing before changing jobs. Whether he killed himself or was stabbed to death by his female companion remains a mystery. No one collects the $1000 (a reward worth ~$28,000 today)
