Cape Cod June 2021

Friday June 4

Time for the 2021 Marci Adventure to Wellfleet, MA on outer Cape Cod.

We flew into Boston just in time for the sunset as we hit the road.

With a stop into Whole Foods for some groceries, we discovered that Hertz had given us a vehicle whose remote battery was nearly dead and would not unlock the vehicle. Marci knew to pull the key blade from inside the transmitter, but that just set off the car alarm. And we still couldn't start the vehicle. We worked out the procedure from the manual to avoid such a scene again

We pulled into our AirB&B in Wellfleet around 11:00 that night, managed to unload the car, and went straight to bed.

Saturday, June 5

Breakfast on the deck before Marci was up. There was a group of some 20 squirrels who'd been skittering all over the place knocking things off of the trees that were hitting the deck that had woken me earlier.

There was a nice selection of Cape Cod books to peruse.

and looking back toward the deck from the door

both rooms had their own bath

the deck from the front of the house as we set out for a morning walk along the private beach

Powers Landing Beach was about a five minute walk

we came back the house to get cleaned up and ready to drive into town to look around

Downtown Wellfleet is two streets: Main and Commercial. It has less than 3000 year-round residents.

In the afternoon we drove up to Truro and stopped at the Noons Landing Beach ahead of our wine tasting at the vineyard there.

we stopped in on the way back at a beach on the opposite side, facing out into the Atlantic, with much stronger winds and waves.

We had dinner at the Pearl along the Wellfleet marina

we returned to the house and got ready for one more walk to the beach for sunet

the Rhododendron bushes were all in full bloom all over the Cape this weekend

Sunday, June 6

We hit the road north to Provincetown for our Whale Watching Cruise

pulled out the zoom lens while we were in the marina to get the light settings right.
A few landmarks from the marina:

this poor guy had been caught up in some fishing gear. There is a group that does whale rescues of this sort in the area and they were alerted to his location from our sighting.

A few minutes later we met Skeg, the grandma whale (only Fin Whale currently known to have calved a baby who has been identified as a mom herself now) Each whale has specific markings and are carefully logged whenever they are spotted.

this is the only nose to tail shot I managed, the one below just cuts off the back of her

headed back around the northernmost part of the Cape and into the bay

We walked the mile down Commercial Street to Fanizzi's for lunch

The staircase below on the right was the Fanizzi stairs down to the beach side. The building and stairs pictured below was home to Mary Oliver for nearly half a century.

It was low tide and the scallop shells were here by the MILLIONS. It was breathtaking.

with MacMillan pier behind us to the west

and turned around

Afterwards, we stopped in at Blackwater Pond and ran into these goslings with their overprotective parents who chased anyone nearby (and they were in the parking lot)

Driving back into Wellfleet:

this is the only grocery option in town. We grabbed some ice cream after the hot day's adventures.

We tried here first, but they weren't opening for the season until the next week.

Monday, June 7

Our shell and rock collection from the weekend (later culled for packing)

the woods view from my bedroom window

one last breakfast on the deck before we packed up and headed back towards Boston

First stop: Nauset Lighthouse (the one used on the Cape Cod chips bag)

Nauset Beach

Second stop: Cape Cod Lavender, just a few weeks to early for the bloom. But the little mom and pop shop had goodies we couldn't resist.

Last stop before Boston: Plymouth

The Mayflower Replica

Then back to Boston for the flight home on a much too short weekend

With about 30 minutes to go, the pilot came on and announced we were slowing down because due to some inclement weather DIA was currently shut down. The flight tracker estimated time jumped up by an hour! But after about 15 minutes we sped up again and arrived only about 20 minutes behind schedule. Come to find out the inclement weather was tornadoes! Guess that's not something you want to tell people in the air, huh?

Safe and sound back on the ground and on the way home.
