Santa Fe '04

Six years ago this month was our trip to New Mexico with Mom and Dad. Bob stayed behind because of work, but I wasn't teaching the first summer session and the kids were free, so we spent two glorious weeks in June on a road trip to Taos and Santa Fe.

The bulk of the trip was spent at this amazing rental house just a few blocks from downtown Santa Fe and our beloved plaza.

The vigas in this place were wonderful, along with the kiva fireplace. Sadly, in June, there was no reason to have a fire going. Of course, there was no air conditioning, either, but the deep thick adobe walls kept us cool even in the New Mexico heat.

The master bedroom

Both of the bathroom windows were hand-painted and I'm still hoping to do this in a house I live in. First step: get windows like this.

I love this picture. Dad directs Sammi in the secret art of pancake making.

Loved the kitchen/dining room, with its tin chandelier, mission style table and chairs, and turquoise burnished cabinets.

The garden was in full bloom. Also a good shot of how thick those adobe walls are!

And ever since this trip, I have attempted to find these flowers. They are a strain of lobelia, but I have never found any that are this brilliant a blue.

Sammi at the Sage Creek Gallery's outdoor bronze exhibit a block off of the Plaza.

Señor Murphy's! We've been visiting this candy maker since I was younger than Sammi is here. They've moved locations over the years and are right next to the La Fonda now. Their piñon fudge is amazing!

From Santa Fe, we were also able to make day trips. One day we headed down to Albequerque and road the Sandia Peak tram to the top.

But the best day trips were the ones where we just got to drive and play and dunk our feet in the water every chance we got.

One of the days we headed up past Georgia O'Keefe country at the Ghost Ranch at Abiquiu. The storm clouds were rolling and it was spectacular.

We stopped in a Chama and then touch the Colorado border. Just a sign of things to come :)

Sunset over Santa Fe.

Nick was 11 this summer and Sammi still had a few months left of being 8, so it really was one of those golden summers of childhood.
