Bertie the Hippo, Denver Zoo's longest resident

Bye, Bye, Bertie.

You were the first hippo I ever heard laugh, and it was such a revelation!

With only two mates and 29 calves, you seemed to do pretty well for yourself.

The zoo would have a Bert-day celebration each August 21 for him and if your ID showed your name was any variation of Bert, you got in free.

58 is a really long run for a hippopotamus, even in captivity. According to Sam, her friend Elly, who works at the zoo, sent her a snapchat yesterday when all the zoo personnel were saying goodbye.
