5-23-11 The Birds are Back

I have the luxury of parking in the garage, so I seldom use the front porch. Since the great garage sale of the move that will not take place, the other half of the garage formerly reserved for Bob's jeep remains cluttered with empty boxes and leftover garage sale detritus, everyone else parks in the drive and uses the front door.

So it is with a bit of trepidation that I point out that the birds are back.

The photographic evidence from this morning:

The foundation for the nest must have been laid just this weekend. And it must take quite a lot of work, since all this fine poop along the siding is new as well. Yuck.

Last summer a pair of swallows overtook the front porch light and built a castle out of mud and feathers and straw that lasted for months and was home to 4 or 5 babies until August when everyone flew the coop.

This delighted me, but I wasn't the victim of repeated and noisy bird dive-bombings. And to be honest, they are a terribly pushy lot. They leave one heck of a mess to clean up and don't seem to understand the concept of sharing their space despite choosing to nest directly over my front door. I'm not too sure Bob won't come home this evening and remove the lamp entirely. At least they are only just beginning construction. They didn't properly apply for a permit, either.

And poor Nick is going to have another phobia if he has to put up with another summer of porch swallows shrieking at him ten times a day as he comes and goes. (Phobia #1, dolls & ventriloquist dummies, but that's another blog.)

At least we haven't witnessed this. . . yet.

  1. If we didn't have several outdoor cats, I'm sure we'd have the swallows over our back door. Not a good place to raise a brood of poopy babies.

The video is adorable. I wonder if that goes for people as well? Birds plucking your hair for nesting material, but you are too old to notice or really even care...

    :)
