Plaza cravings

I woke up this morning craving a visit to The Plaza Cafe in Santa Fe. We have been visiting this place since I was a girl on summer visits to New Mexico in the 1970s. Of course, Dad was most interested in pictures of the mountains, not eating establishments, so the first pictures I have are from our trip in 2004.

It's directly on the Governor's Plaza, as the name would suggest. And there just is no better place for breakfast when you're in Santa Fe. Of course, all the other meals are yummy, too.

Here we are again on our return trip in 2007, this time at Thanksgiving, when we ate here three mornings in a row. The place stays the same, not so much the people out front.

One of the bigger booths is right up front with a view out onto the Plaza. We'd had snow the night before. (Note that mom and dad don't even look at the menu any more. They travel to Santa Fe quite a bit more frequently than the rest of us.)

Here are the Huevos Rancheros with blue corn tortillas. They will ask if you want red or green chilis, but your best bet is to ask for Christmas, and get both.

And on a cold morning, I can't decide between the diner's coffee and the hot chocolate with 3-4 inches of whipped cream on the top.

Next time I'm there (soon I hope!) I want to get some more detailed shots of the decor. The broken shards of black and white dinnerware makes a mosaic above the bar, which you can just see at the very top of this picture. They've also got framed pictures of the cafe from throughout the years, since all the way back to 1918.

Note the bottle of honey -- perfect on their sopapillas. Mmmmmmm.

Check out their menu here.

And here are some of their photos of the place from their website.

If you ever find yourself in Santa Fe, don't miss this place.

  1. I love The Plaza. So looking forward to being back there late summer!

Oh - and I'll ask for Christmas instead of just green next time. Yum!
