12-9-11 Christmas Song(s) of the Day #9: Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Decided to go with the only 30s song to make the graphic instead of Gene's "Here Comes Santa Claus" partly because I just did a Gene song yesterday and because I have many more versions of this one in the library. And I have a beef with one version that needs discussion.

One of the original 1934 versions (there appear to be several) with the Harry Reser Orchestra featuring a banjo solo:

Bill Evans

Dave Brubeck Quartet

Ray Charles

The Crystals

Johnny Mercer & The Pied Piers
which has to be included because no other version starts with "Fat man's comin'! Fat man's comin'!"

And, last...

The Jackson 5's version.

Michael is 12 in 1970. He can read.

I guess I could get over "he knows when you are WAKE", but why on earth does he sing about the curly head dolls that "TOODLE" and coo?

(Man, I hope he's saying "Toodle." It's that or "doodoo.")

What is a TOODLE?

It's TODDLE. The doll toddles. You know, WALKS?

They really couldn't get another take with the right word? 40+ years now the doll is still toodling and no ones knows what's going on.

  1. Yep the J5 version is a pet peeve of mine too with that "toodle" lyric...who let that slip into the song instead of toddle?
